David Toop, Rie Nakajima and Angharad Davies play Mieko Shiomi

David Toop is a musician/composer, author and curator. He studied fine art and graphic design in the late 1960s, then in 1971–72 participated as guitarist and flautist in the first improvisation workshops led by jazz drummer John Stevens. His first album, New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments, was released on Brian Eno’s Obscure Records label in 1975; since 1995 he has released eight solo albums. He has published a number of books, and written essays for artists such as Susan Philipsz, Haroon Mirza, Christian Marclay, and Francis Alys. As a critic and essayist he has written for many publications, including The Wire, The Face, and The Times. He is a Chair of Audio Culture and Improvisation at the University of the Arts London, and Visiting Professor at Leeds College of Music.

Rie Nakajima is a Japanese artist working with installations and performances that produce sound. Her works are most often composed in direct response to unique architectural spaces using a combination of kinetic devices and found objects. She has exhibited and performed widely both in the UK and overseas and has produced the ‘Sculpture’ series with David Toop since 2013. She frequently collaborates with David Cunningham, Miki Yui, Pierre Berthet, Guy De Bièvre across the fields of art and music. She has performed with musicians Clive Bell, Lee Patterson, Daichi Yoshikawa, Shuichi Chino, Lau Nau, Phill Niblock and many others. In 2014 she received the Arts Foundation Award in the category of Experimental Music.

Angharad Davies is a violinist with a wide discography as part of a varied range of ensembles and groups. In 2015 she was commissioned to produce a new work for the Counterflows Festival, Glasgow and premiered Eliane Radigue’s new solo for violin, ‘Occam XXII’ at the El Nicho Festival, Mexico. Over the course of her career, she has performed at Queen Elizabeth Hall, BBC Proms, and as part of Music We’d Like to Hear’s concert series. She is an associate artist at Cafe Oto, is a member of the groups Apartment House, Cranc and Common Objects, and has been artist in residence at Q-02, Brussels. She has also played live with Tony Conrad in the Turbine Hall atTate Modern, London, and has released records on Absinth Records, Another Timbre, Potlatch and Confrontrecords.
