Join a screening of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen’s works on artists as part of the Whitechapel Gallery film season Laura Mulvey & Peter Wollen: Beyond the Scorched Earth of Counter-Cinema.
In 1982, Mulvey and Wollen curated an exhibition of Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti’s work at the Whitechapel Gallery. This hugely influential exhibition, which was the first retrospective of Kahlo’s work outside of Mexico, provided the subject for Mulvey and Wollen’s documentary Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti (1983), which offers a powerful assessment of both artists’ lives and work.
Also screened during this event are Wollen’s TV documentaries from the 1990s, Full Cycle: The Art of Komar and Melamid (1991) and an extract from Images of Atlantis: The Photography of Milton Rogovin (1992).
Curator Mark Francis, who worked together with Mulvey and Wollen on the exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, will introduce this screening.
Mark Francis is a curator and writer based in New York and London, and is a director of Gagosian Gallery. In 1982 he was exhibition organiser at Whitechapel Art Gallery and worked closely with Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen on ‘Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti’.
