This discussion coincides with the exhibition Imperfect Chronology – Mapping the Contemporary II (23 August 2016 – 8 January 2017), the culmination of a four part project drawn from the Barjeel Art Foundation Collection and displayed at the Whitechapel Gallery over the past year.
From the concept of an ‘Imperfect Chronology’ to the debate on Modernism’s alternative histories and how they have shaped contemporary artistic practice in the Arab world, the event unpacks definitions of ‘Arab art’, considering its diasporic and multiple identities.
How to map art through an expanded concept of territory? How to address the relationship between representation and abstraction, between tradition and the contemporary?
Convened by Barjeel Art Foundation founder Sultan Al Qassemi andImperfect Chronology curator Omar Kholeif, speakers include collector Ramzi Dalloul, curator Reem Fadda, Hannah Feldman,Professor Northwestern University, Dina Ramadan, Assistant Professor at Bard College, and writer Kaelen Wilson-Goldie.
