Guided by the Whitechapel Gallery’s Communications team, this course is an intensive fast-track  opportunity to learn what makes a creative, effective Communications campaign for an exhibition today; from strategy and targets to press, marketing, social media and design.

You will learn about:

  • The role of Communications
  • Securing media coverage
  • Engaging audiences on social media
  • Advertising on a budget
  • Designing an effective poster

About Jenny Lea

Jenny Lea , Director of Communications, joined the Whitechapel Gallery in 2015 and has worked for 20 years in arts communications in London and internationally. Her experience spans both not-for-profit and commercial sectors, including The National Gallery, Tate and Phaidon Press. At the Whitechapel Gallery she leads the organisational audience development strategy and manages the Communications team who deliver all digital activity, media relations, advertising and design.

About Lucy Hawes

Lucy Hawes joined the Whitechapel Gallery in 2018 as Senior Media Relations Manager and specialises in media relations within the cultural sector. She worked for five years at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), leading press campaigns for headline exhibitions including You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966 – 7’ and Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear. Prior to the V&A, Lucy worked at PR agency Lexis with a focus on global consumer brands. She comes from an English literature background, with a MA from UCL in Issues in Modern Culture.

About Priya Shemar

Priya Shemar is Marketing Manager at the Whitechapel Gallery. She has previously worked at Tate Modern, working on the marketing campaigns for exhibitions such as Alexander Calder: Performing Sculpture (2015), Georgia O’Keeffe (2016), Robert Rauschenberg (2016), Wolfgang Tillmans: 2017 (2017), Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power (2017) and the communications campaigns launching the New Tate Modern and Uniqlo Tate Lates in 2017. Priya has also worked in marketing and editorial teams at Bloomsbury Publishing and continues to write culture and opinion pieces for independent magazines.

About James Sutton

James Sutton is the Design and Production Manager at the Whitechapel gallery, joining the Communications team in 2017 overseeing all design for the Gallery’s Marketing and signage. Previously he has worked as a graphic designer for 4 years in a small studio, creating catalogues, printed matter and digital design primarily for commercial and public art galleries. James received his degree in graphic design from Falmouth University.
