Youth Takeover: Visions of the Future

12 – 4pm                                                                                     

Visit an immersive installation exploring a day in the life of a young person in the year 2119!

Through costumes, sculptures, props and writing Duchamp & Sons speculate on the future of humanity, social interaction, climate change, surveillance, technology, nightlife and culture. Developed in collaboration with artist Freddy Tuppen and product designer Tessa Silva from STORE Projects.

Create your version of the future and add to a collective time capsule.

2 – 3pm

What will the future sound like? Join this sound making workshop and layer your responses over soundtracks created by Community Music students in response to Is This Tomorrow? and make new compositions.

3-3:30pm

Watch a live performance by musicians from The Orchestra of the Age Of Enlightenment improvising over new compositions created from the workshop.

12 – 4pm

Stream futuristic soundtracks by Community Music as you explore the exhibition using your smart phone or tablet, or pick up a device* at the Gallery.

Participate in performances by Siobhan Davies Dance Young Artists Collective.

Performance 1
Why do we feel so distant from animals? Are we not all part of the planet? Are we not animals too?
Join dance artists Sumi Cheng, Elettra Guinta and Juliet Mello  to explore Enclosure, by artist Amalia Pica and 6a architects. Set within the installation, this performance uses movement and conversation to playfully question our present city life and whether humans are different from animals in relation to possession, politics and ownership.

Performance 2
Is it too late? What will freedom look like? Dance artists Yanaëlle Thiran and Lydia Swift use movement to investigate questions posed by artists and architects in the exhibition’s Reading Room. Draw cards to determine the order of their performances. Interpret their actions and positions through looking, writing and drawing.

2 – 3pm                                

Join a tour of Is This Tomorrow? led by current and past Duchamp & Sons members sharing their personal response to works in the exhibition. With Aasiya Merali, Fiona Verran, Michael Asante, Niquelle La Touche and Zlata Mechetina.

3:30 – 4pm                                                                   

Performances by Siobhan Davies Dance Young Artists Collective repeated.

Duchamp & Sons
Whitechapel Gallery’s youth forum, Duchamp & Sons is open to young people aged 15–21 and offers opportunities to explore contemporary art, meet creative professionals, and open up career paths into the sector. The group meets at the Gallery regularly to collaborate with artists and other creative practitioners. They make art, curate their own exhibitions, pop-up displays and events at the Gallery. Community Music and Westminster University Community Music (CM) is a youth and community music organisation based in East London. Students from Westminster University work with Community Music to undertake a two-year foundation degree in Creative Music and Business (validated by the University of Westminster). Find out more here.

Young Artists Collective
Siobhan Davies Dance Young Artists Collective is a peer network and youth advisory group made up of 54 artists who have completed the Next Choreography course. Through monthly meetings members of the group input into Siobhan Davies Dance’s artistic programme, discuss industry movements and opportunities, share their own work with their peers, get practical knowledge from guest speakers and organise their own events.
