Artists are increasingly confronting and reshaping ideologies of health, critically tackling illness and impairment in their practice while challenging institutional failures to support multiple abilities. Celebrating the latest in the Documents of Contemporary Art series of anthologies edited by Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz, this event invites artist Khairani Barokka, Pedro Neves Marques and Patricia Domínguez to contribute to our thinking about how health intersects with sexuality, ethnicity, gender, class and coloniality.
The event features an introductory talk by Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz, a live Q&A with Khairani Barokka, and two specially recorded contributions from Pedro Neves Marques and Patricia Domínguez.

Khairani Barokka is a writer and artist from Jakarta whose work has been presented in 15 countries. Okka’s work centres disability justice as anti-colonial praxis. She is currently Researcher-in-Residence and Research Fellow at UAL’s Decolonising Arts Institute, and Associate Artist at the National Centre for Writing. She has been Modern Poetry in Translation’s Inaugural Poet-inResidence, a UNFPA Indonesian Young Leader Driving Social Change, and an NYU Tisch Departmental Fellow. Okka’s interdisciplinary work, including the Annah, Infinite performance installation series, has been an ArtForum Must-See. Her books are Rope (Nine Arches) and Indigenous Species (Tilted Axis), and she is co-editor of Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back (Nine Arches). Barokka is currently working on a book of memoir/cultural criticism on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bringing together experimental research on ethnobotany, healing practices, and the corporatization of wellbeing, the work of Patricia Domínguez focuses on how neoliberalism perpetuates colonial practices of extraction and exploitation. Recent solo exhibitions include Madre Drone, CentroCentro, Madrid, and Cosmic Tears, Yeh Art Gallery, New York (both 2020); Green Irises, Gasworks, London (2019); Llanto Cósmico, Twin Gallery, Madrid (2018). Recent group exhibitions include MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image, Montreal; The trouble is staying, Meet Factory, Prague (both 2019); What is going to happen is not ‘the future’, but what we are going to do, ARCOMadrid; Working for the Future Past, SEMA, Seoul (both 2018).
Pedro Neves Marques is a visual artist, filmmaker, and writer. They have published widely between art, anthropology, and ecology, edited the anthology The Forest and The School (Archive Books, 2015) and guest-edited e-flux journal’s special issue Supercommunity (2015), now available from Verso. They are the author of two short story collections, most recently Morrer na América (2017) and a poetry collection, Sex as Care and Other Viral Poems (2020) by their poetry publisher pântano books. They have had solo shows at Castello di Rivoli (Turin), High Line and e-flux (New York), Gasworks (London), Pérez Art Museum of Miami, 1646 (The Hague), and Museu Colecção Berardo (Lisbon). Forthcoming solo shows include at CA2M in Madrid and CaixaFórum in Barcelona, as well as Guangzhou Image Triennial, Liverpool Biennial and Gwangju Biennale.
Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz is a writer and Curator of Temporary Exhibitions at Wellcome Collection, London. Her exhibitions include ‘This is a Voice’ (2016), ‘Bedlam’ (co-curated with Mike Jay, 2017), and ‘Jo Spence and Oreet Ashery: Misbehaving Bodies’ (co-curated with George Vasey, 2019–20). She has written for Afterall, Concreta, Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, MARG and Mousse Publishing.
