The London-based artist duo discuss their film The Unreliable Narrator (2014), which tells the story of the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, India. This event uses the film as a starting point to think more widely about contemporary issues and conditions, including the line between ‘The Freedom Fighter’ and ‘The Terrorist’ and whether this has changed in modern times. With invited respondents, artist and writer Sophia Al-Maria and Howard Caygill, Professor of Modern European Philosophy at Kingston University.
Sophia Al-Maria is an artist and writer based in London. Her memoir, The Girl Who Fell to Earth was published in 2012 by Harper Collins and is due out Spring 2015 in Arabic. Her first solo show, Virgin With a Memory was mounted in September 2014 at Cornerhouse, Manchester and was about the unmaking of her feature film Beretta.
Howard Caygill is Professor Of Modern European Philosophy at Kingston University London. He has published extensively in the field of philosophy and aesthetics including most recently On Resistance: A philosophy of Defiance (2013) and (forthcoming) Kafka: In the Light of the Accident (2015) and Staging Disorder (2015).
Karen Mirza and Brad Butler have been developing a body of work entitled The Museum of Non Participation since 2007. Embedded in change, protest, non-alignment and debate, Mirza and Butler negotiate these influences between art and social praxis. They are the founders of the London-based artist film and video space: no.w.here. The Museum of Non Participation is currently nominated for the Artes Mundi 6 Award for visual artists who engage with the human condition.
