On Tuesday 22 March 2022, Whitechapel Gallery hosted its annual Art Icon gala in honour of renowned artist Tracey Emin.

Emin was the ninth artist to receive the prestigious Art Icon award supported by the Swarovski Foundation.

Tracey Emin’s expressive and visceral work is renowned for its portrayal of personal experience and heightened states of emotion. Frank and intimate, but universal in its relevance, her practice draws on the fundamental themes of desire and grief, unravelling the constructs of ‘woman’ and ‘self’ through painting, drawing, film, photography, sewn appliqué, sculpture and neon.

The evening coincided with an online auction of leading contemporary artworks with auction partner Phillips.

All funds raised from the gala and auction support Whitechapel Gallery’s pioneering education and community programmes.
