About this Event
– This is a free event with no entry cost. Attendees of this event will receive free entry to the exhibition A Century of the Artist’s Studio before the event on 14 April.
– This event takes place in the Creative Studio, which is accessible via lift and stairs.
– A quiet space will be provided, available for anyone who wishes to access this.
– This event will last for roughly 1.5 hours. A comfort break will be scheduled halfway through the event.
– Simple refreshments will be provided.
– Live captioning will be provided for this event.
– We are unable to provide BSL for this event.
Transport
– To the best of our knowledge, there are no planned disruptions to local transport on the date of the event.
– Our nearest train station – Aldgate East Underground (1 min) is not wheelchair accessible. The closest wheelchair accessible stations are Whitechapel (15 min), Shoreditch High Street (15 min) or Liverpool Street (15 min).
– Free parking for Blue Badge holders is available at the top of Osborn Street in the pay and display booths for an unlimited period. Spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.
Join us for a discussion on supported studio practices in discussion with artists and staff from Portugal Prints studio and Submit to Love Studios.
In contrast to the stereotyped image of the lone artist toiling in an isolated studio, this conversation will focus on the value of collective making within a supported environment, and explore what is possible in these settings that does not exist elsewhere.
This interactive and relaxed discussion will take place in Whitechapel Gallery’s Creative Studio, and has been organised in response to our current exhibition A Century of the Artist’s Studio: 1920-2020.
Portugal Prints is a therapeutic arts project within Mind in Brent, Wandsworth, and Westminster. They have been bridging mental health support and artistic development since 1979. They work with artists living with mental health difficulties to construct a life beyond support services, a life of creativity and curiosity.
Art is at the heart of Portugal Prints and the main tool to empower people to express themselves to build resilience and to nurture meaningful relationships. With a non-clinical approach, they offer a tailored long-term, holistic support that is practical, social, emotional, and creative.
Submit to Love Studios is home to a group of artists living with a brain injury. We work collectively in an open studio environment and help bring out the best in each other. The act of making is an empowering and hopeful one. In making something, you’re discovering – new gifts, new culture, new connections and new identities. That’s why our mission is “discovery through art”. Art that is by everyone, for everyone. All artists are members of Headway East London in Hackney — a local charity supporting brain injury survivors, their families and carers.
