We Were All Once Virgins

6 July - 27 June

Nanhee Kim graduated her BFA Koninklijke Academie Van Beeldende Kunsten, Netherlands in 2019. MFA Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg, Germany in 2022. She now lives & works in Hamburg.

Kim’s artwork draws inspiration from various sources, including conversations, movies, and images. Playing with these inputs, Kim creates humorous and absurd situations that are both playful and thought-provoking. Through her work, she aims to explore the boundaries between reality and fiction, often blurring the lines between the two to create a surreal and colourful world. Kim’s unique approach to storytelling and her use of humour as a tool for social commentary make her artwork both engaging and thought-provoking.

Her interpersonal descriptions are carefully crafted to provide insight into the human condition, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and perspectives. Overall, Kim’s work is a celebration of the absurdities and complexities of life, and a testament to the power of humour and imagination to make sense of it all.

The term “Virgin” encompasses the initial moments encountered throughout our lives, irrespective of our sexual experiences. Transitioning from a state of virginity to a life of experience is not an entirely unprecedented event but rather a process of acquainting oneself with new facets of existence.

In her show “We Were All Once Virgins”, Kim impartially examines her own persona from an external standpoint. By employing metaphorical expressions derived from personal encounters, she portrays shared life circumstances to capture the essence of human existence. While most paintings predominantly feature Kim’s visage, her ultimate aim is to stimulate viewers to engage in introspective contemplation of their own unique experiences and perspectives.
