4 July - 7 July
Welcome to another world, to a provocative new exhibition of artworks from two of Britain’s most important emerging queer artists. Featuring photographic works from Colin Davis, and oil paintings by Orpheus, the work of both artists is deep-rooted in gay BDSM (bondage, discipline or domination, sadism or submission, and masochism) and so-called kink (kinky sexual) subcultures. The artworks on show draw inspiration from Old Master – predominantly Baroque – art, and both artists’ work is marked by great technical mastery of their respective media.
Part of Fetish Week London, this is the first major show of both Orpheus’s and Colin Davis’s work to take place in London, and the first time that works by the two artists have been shown side by side. The result of this is the creation of some astonishing juxtapositions which elevate the exhibition to one that is greater than the sum of its parts. Further to the recent Doron Langberg and Tom of Finland / Beryl Cook exhibitions at Victoria Miro and Studio Voltaire respectively, this type of uninhibited gay art is having a real moment of important exposure – part of what the Art Newspaper referred to last year as a ‘randy renaissance’.
Vote for art on Thursday 4 July and join us and an eclectic crowd – where anything goes dress-code-wise – for drinks and music to open this provocative show and to celebrate the work of Colin Davis and Orpheus. The artists will be in attendance, elaborate on one another’s work, and share their experience of working together for this exhibition.
Paintings, Photographs, Prints, Catalogues and Postcard Sets will be for sale.
