Into the Void: Time & Space Brought to Life through Lenticular Art

Velorose

7 November - 15 November

Inhabiting a spectrum that stretches from the sublime and deeply serious to the (intentionally) ridiculous, Into the Void showcases the great diversity of Patrick Boyd‘s art, with all the exhibited works linked through their use of the medium of lenticular photography.

Boyd’s work explores themes of perception, memory and historical trauma, and – by contrast – issues of consumerism and identity. His ‘Hibakusha’ series of portraits (which includes some of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize winners) delves into the psychological and physical scars left by the atomic bombings of Japan, with the lenticules suggesting the layers of suffering and resilience experienced by survivors. His ‘Model Behaviour’ series begins with miniature models made by the artist, then located in a suitable context and captured on film to create a new reality, and uses the dynamism of lenticular technology to underscore the fluid and fleeting nature of our media landscape. The only way to grasp the artworks is to see them in person, and to move in relation to them.

Whether creating shallow artificial worlds in order to convey the vagaries of consumer culture, or capturing the realities of this world to shine a light on its deep horrific truths, Patrick Boyd’s visually captivating and intellectually engaging art is one to watch (while moving one’s head, or oneself, slowly to the left and right). It may be a rarity for art to bring a smile to one’s face, if not to address the injustice of war, but either way Into the Void allows the viewer to observe the world on our doorstep, and well beyond, through the eyes and the depths of the artist.
