Whitechapel Gallery announces Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940 – 1970

Whitechapel Gallery presents Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-70. The exhibition reaches beyond the predominantly white, male painters whose names are synonymous with the Abstract Expressionism movement, to discover the practices of numerous international women artists working with gestural abstraction in the aftermath of the Second World War.

Whitechapel Gallery Art Icon 2023: Jenny Holzer to be honoured on 19 January 2023

Whitechapel Gallery is pleased to announce that Jenny Holzer (b. 1950) is the tenth artist to receive its prestigious annual Art Icon award. On 19 January 2023, the award will be presented at a gala celebration hosted by Whitechapel Gallery Director, Gilane Tawadros.

Shortlist Announcement: Max Mara Art Prize for Women 22-24

The Whitechapel Gallery, Collezione Maramotti and Max Mara are delighted to announce the five shortlisted artists for the ninth edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women:

Rebecca Bellantoni, Bhajan Hunjan, Onyeka Igwe, Zinzi Minott and Dominique White. This weekend the artists travelled to Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, for the announcement as well as to celebrate the opening of the major artwork The Age/L’Età, by the eighth winner of the prize, Emma Talbot. The Age/L’Età tours from the Whitechapel Gallery where it was unveiled this summer.

Joy Gregory with Whitechapel Gallery has won the Freelands Award 2023. This award enables organisations to present an exhibition by a mid-career female-identifying artist who may not yet have received the acclaim or public recognition that her work deserves.
