We learn from experts with comprehensive experience in the logistical and practical handling of artworks, to ascertain safe and established industry approaches to planning, designing, installing and lighting exhibitions within the conservation guidelines.

The day will cover:

  • Planning to receive work (scheduling, insurance, transport considerations)
  • Establishing stable gallery and building environments
  • Receiving artwork in
  • Unpacking and handling
  • Installing techniques and tips
  • Sustaining and Maintaining Exhibitions
  • Lighting artworks

10am – 5pm

The Art Fund supports this ‘How to: Inside the Gallery’ series by offering a number of fully funded places per course for curators and museum and gallery professionals. The deadline is 18 December 2015, to apply, head to the Art Fund Website.

Thomas Malcherczyk

Currently Gallery Operations Manager at Hayward Gallery, Malcherczyk has over 25 years of experience in the field across numerous institutions such as Tate, The National Gallery, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Pinchuk Art Centre – Kiev, Arken – Copenhagen, Haunch of Venison – Berlin, Lever House – New York and Gagosian.

He has worked directly with some of the most important artists working today, indeed was Studio Manager for Damien Hirst and oversaw production, leading on many exhibitions including the complex Sotheby’s Bond Street Auction ‘Beautiful Inside My Head Forever’. Malcherczyk brings great expertise in practical aspects of gallery preparation, art installation, team and schedule management to maintain high quality and safe standards and conditions of work.

John and Tom Johnson of Lightwaves

Lightwaves ltd are exhibition lighting experts with over 40 years of experience in exhibitions, display and lighting design. They have worked extensively over the years with Whitechapel Gallery, Tate, Hayward Gallery and Royal Academy and directly advised artists such as Olafur Elliason, David Hockney and Anish Kapoor amongst many others.
