Coinciding with his Whitechapel Gallery exhibition Introduction to Nyau Cinema (23 August 2016 – 8 January 2017), artist Samson Kambalu gives a performative lecture prompted by his Nyau films, discussing alternative concepts of time and the subversive potential of play.
Part of the Whitechapel Gallery’s ‘Big Ideas’ talk series – a platform for renowned speakers, from scholars and thinkers to curators and artists, to share and discuss their current research and work.
Samson Kambalu studied fine art and ethnomusicology in Malawi andin the UK. His award winning book, The Jive Talker, or How to Get a British Passport, was published in 2008. His work has featured in the Liverpool Biennial (2016), Dak’art, Senegal (2014 and 2016) and the 56th Venice Biennale (2015).
