1 April - 20 May
Hales Gallery will be exhibiting works by John Hoyland (b.1934 Sheffield, UK – d.2011 London, UK) who is considered one of the most inventive and dynamic abstract painters of the post-war period.
His works are often underpinned by dramatic bursts of colour with incoherent yet refined forms, culminating in a grand and energetic experience.
This debut show, titled ‘Flames Like Rainbows’ focuses on a key development in his career. Showcasing paintings from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. The works are a noticeable departure from pure abstraction. Inspired by his travels to Bali, recognisable shapes such as trees, flags, and cascades of water work their way into his abstract scenes.
