Artist Residency Opportunity
January – May 2018
The Whitechapel Gallery invites artists living and working in London, who have graduated in the last three years to apply for a residency with the Gallery’s Youth Forum: Duchamp & Sons.
This is an exciting opportunity for an artist with a socially-engaged practice to collaborate with young people around the theme Transition and Turnings. Over four months, the artist will work alongside the group in realising a project leading to an exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery (Galleries 5 & 6) in May 2018.
Key aims of the residency:
All sessions with the youth forum will take place in a studio at the Whitechapel Gallery however we are unable to provide a permanent studio space for the course of the residency. We can however provide a space to complete work in the lead up to the exhibition. The artist will receive a fee of £3000 for the project and exhibition.
Applications open from 6 to 26 November 2017
Submissions will be reviewed by the Youth Forum and the Swarovski Foundation Curator: Youth Programmes. The selected artist will be informed of the panel’s decision by 12 January 2018. Applicants should have a socially-engaged practice and experience of working collaboratively.
The Whitechapel Gallery brings modern and contemporary art and ideas to local, national and international audiences by providing a place for free-thinking, creativity and learning.
The Youth Programme works with young people aged 15 to 21. It offers both long and short-term opportunities to encounter contemporary art, artists, creative practitioners and peers.
The Youth Forum: Duchamp & Sons are a group of thirty young people who meet at the Gallery regularly. They make art, curate their own exhibitions and events, and have even staged performances on Whitechapel High Street. The Programme introduces new skills, practical experience and a behind-the-scenes insight into the world of a contemporary art gallery. It also seeks to raise aspirations and open up career paths in the creative sector.
