Artist Edwina Ashton worked with students from Christchurch Primary School in Tower Hamlets to explore themes from her 2016 Whitechapel Gallery Children’s Commission In the Winter Hours.
During the residency students visited the exhibition regularly, creating drawings, costumes and choreographing dances and movements.
As part of a Whitechapel Gallery Family Day the students paraded through the galleries in their creations leading participants to take part in a celebratory ‘Animal Disco’.
“In the gallery there was a stall with hot dogs but you couldn’t eat it because it was art. There was a floppy thing made out of wood on top of the tower but only teddies could jump off it into the black pool. Animals looked like they had lots of fun.”
